DEFCON 14 underway

The DEFCON 14 hacker convention got underway yesterday (Friday) in Las Vegas, NV, at the Riviera Hotel and Casino.

The conference was to begin at 1000, but a fire marshal due for a 0900 safety inspection didn't show up until 1130, delaying the conference start by over 2 hours. It doesn't help that you have several thousand conference attendees waiting around for something to happen, and many tend toward the anti-authoritarian attitude typical of the hacker community (a stereotype yes, but one that is true in some respects)!

Some talks were shortened to attempt to get back on the original schedule, but I don't know how that turned out. I was to participate in a talk at 1200 via webcam (2300 local here in Iraq), but the delay pushed it past 0100. The combination of cutting the length of the talks and some communications difficulties on their end prevented my participation. Disappointed, yes, but also tired by 0200!

Here's hoping that Saturday and Sunday go off without a hitch, and that a good time is had by all, preferably without any arrests (ala HOPE in NYC in July)!

Early on in the Spring, I was days away from buying plane tickets and making hotel reservations, and then of course the Navy changed my plans for me! At least I didn't lose any money on this one. Hopefully I can get to Defcon 15 next year!
