Halftime: Penn State 14, Minnesota 7

At halftime:
  • Both teams had some success moving the football, but couldn't convert third downs (combined 3/14).
  • Both teams capitalized on good field position to score their only touchdowns (until Penn State scored again in the final minute of the second quarter).
  • Both teams were unable to convert a 4th and inches in the red zone.
At the 3 minute mark of the second quarter, after stopping Bryan Cupito's failed QB sneak on 4th and inches, Tony Hunt ran for 15 yards off left tackle. Minnesota's corner was hurt on that play, and Anthony Morelli took advantage with a huge play to Derrick Williams. However, Penn State stalled again in the red zone and botched a Kevin Kelly field goal attempt.

Minnesota played conservative after the failed field goal and quickly went three and out. Derrick Williams returned the punt for 16 yards putting Penn State in ideal field position. Morelli found Jordan Norwood down the left side. Finally, Minnesota blitzed off the right side and Penn State capitalized with a nice Morelli screen pass to Tony Hunt for a 15-yard touchdown and the halftime lead.

Amir Pinnix has 19 carries for only 54 yards, while Tony Hunt has 52 yards on only 10 carries. Anthony Morelli is 12 for 21 for 191 yards and 1 TD (decent full game numbers given what we've seen from him thus far) while Bryan Cupito is 8 for 10 for 115 yards and 1 TD. Total yards thus far are 241-163 in favor of Penn State.

Will this be Derrick Williams' breakout game (finally)? He has 4 catches for 94 yards (23.5 yard average) and a 16 yard punt return.

Minnesota gets the ball to start the second half, so once again it will be left to the Nittany Lion defense to set the tone.
