The last two seasons (2014, 2015), I made predictions on the projected 53-man roster for the Philadelphia Eagles. Both seasons I correctly predicted 49 of the 53 final roster spots. Now that I feel comfortable understanding Chip Kelly's selection process, we get to start over with Doug Pederson. This is Andy Reid, Part II.

On Thursday evening, I made my final predictions for this year's roster. I was hoping to improve on last year's 49/53 performance. Here are predictions from Thursday, edited to match the final, 53-man roster...which actually stands at 52 now; it appears the Eagles are looking for a third QB. Players who made the team despite not being on my list are in italics. I correctly picked 49/52.

I predicted five players on the bubble who would make the team (QB Tebow, RB Barner, LB Smith, CB Watkins, S Prosinski). Of those, Tebow, Watkins and Prosinski didn't make it. A slight surprise that both Tebow and Barkley are gone, but not shocking. Only Prosinski is a real surprise to me. Although I had him on the bubble, I thought his special teams performance since he was picked up last year would help him hold down the last safety spot. Obviously it did not. Watkins was a true bubble player so while I had him making it, it does not surprise me at all that he was cut.

I predicted five players who would be the first  five out, or essentially my five toughest cuts. These are the players on the other side of the bubble who wouldn't make it (QB Barkley, TE Tomlinson, OLB Goode, S Reynolds, S Couplin). Barkley was traded to the Cardinals and presumably would have been cut; the coaches seem to have preferred Couplin to Prosinski and Reynolds so Couplin will end up being the only "toughest cut" who made the team.

With JaCorey Shepherd's ACL tear, I moved Jaylen Watkins into his roster spot. However, he didn't look very impressive on Sunday so he's definitely on the bubble. Ed Reynolds and EJ Biggers both played well and have every opportunity to move into that spot.

It's not too difficult to project the first 48 or so players on the roster but the last group of 4-5 players is always very difficult.

First five out: Barkley, Acho, Goode, Watkins, Wolff

 I've learned with Chip Kelly that those last few spots come down to versatility (special teams) and injuries. Here are a few close calls that could go either way:

QB: Tebow > Barkley

OL: Not at all confident in the offensive line depth. Training camp could definitely make a difference in the third and/or fourth guard or tackle. I have John Moffitt on the bubble, but he could easily move up with a good camp.

S: Earl Wolff should be in the mix, but the injury bug may really hurt his chances of making the roster especially with Walter Thurmond switching to safety. Given the value that Chip places on special teams players, it would be difficult to see him part with Maragos or Prosinski, both of whom were among the league's best last year. Only time will tell.

Aug 27 2014: Rosters are now down to 75 spots with the final cut to 53 coming by Saturday. There have been no real surprises thus far, except for the fact that Curtis Marsh and Roc Carmichael are still on the team. However, they're probably just on the roster until Saturday (or sooner) as bodies for Thursday night's game. Some expected that DE Joe Kruger might last longer, but he did not. Fortunately for Kruger, he'll get another look with the Chargers.

The one of the biggest battles remains at RB. Only McCoy and Sproles are guarantees at this point. Polk, Tucker, Barner and Josey all have a chance at the third spot (or a fourth spot if the Eagles keep four RBs as I have projected). Polk has been injured for almost all of camp. Tucker and Josey have shown nice bursts in pre-season games. Barner was just added last week but played for Chip Kelly at Oregon.

Lastly I added a big question mark behind Alex Henery. I still have him as the presumptive kicker but his job is definitely on the line.

Aug 15 2014: Backup center Julian Vandervelde recently had back surgery. There is no timetable for his return, but it seems unlikely he would be on the opening game roster. David Molk will benefit from Vandervelde's injury. No other changes in the last ten days.

Aug 5 2014: The most likely player on my projected final roster that may not actually make the final roster is RB Matthew Tucker. If the Eagles only take 3 RBs, Tucker would be the casualty.

If Tucker gets cut, I'd expect his spot to be replaced with an additional offensive lineman or defensive lineman. Offensive line additions could be David Molk (who might replace Vandervelde) or Andrew Gardner. Backup offensive linemen is definitely a weak spot.

I'd love to find spots for WR/TE Trey Burton, RB Henry Josey, and DE Alejandro Villanueva but they'll probably end up on the practice squad.

Reactions to Vick signing

It is being announced today that the Philadelphia Eagles signed Michael Vick to a one year contract with an option for a second year. Reaction has been swift and (from my perspective) mostly negative. There seems to be a great deal of outrage that anyone would sign Michael Vick at all.

Michael Vick was convicted of federal dogfighting charges and served 18 months in prison and additional time on house arrest (missing two full seasons). Earlier this year, NFL Commissioner Roger Gooddell reinstated Vick conditionally, allowing Vick to play the last two preseason games. He could also miss a handful of regular season games.

Browns wide receiver Donte Stallworth was driving drunk and hit and killed a pedestrian. While their were mitigating circumstances (the man was not at a crosswalk, etc.), Stallworth's actions resulted in the man's death. Stallworth served a grand total of 30 days in jail, and Goodell suspended him for the entire upcoming season.

I have never been a Michael Vick fan, but it is difficult to deny his talent. Added to this is the recent addition to the NFL of the "Wildcat" offense for which Vick would seem to be the perfect fit. So it is inevitable that someone was going to sign him this year.

No one is defending the cruelty that Vick perpetrated. It was vicious, violent, and wrong. I willingly admit I was one of the many people who was glad to see him go to prison. But he served his time, and he has apologized and accepted responsibility. What else can you ask of the man? Stallworth will miss this season, but he'll likely be back next year. Why don't we see the same level of outrage at Stallworth, whose action resulted in the death of a human being?

I'm still here

I know I haven't posted in almost two weeks, but yes, I'm still here. I've been enjoying the time off with Tracy, the kids, and the baby.

You'll be able to vote for the Chronicles of Narmya in (hopefully) a couple of categories. You can be sure that I'll post updates here and make it as easy as possible for you to vote (for me, of course)!

Eventually (once the awards are over) I'll probably change the name of the blog back to the simple MikeBlog. While I did enjoy the name change (again, credit goes to Tracy), I'm back stateside now and it only makes sense. Also, the location change reflects a bigger shift in my posts from Iraq-centric (and even then it was pretty weak) to American-centric, usually involving politics, news, sports, etc. The biggest reason for the focus on Iraq was to give my readers a sense of what it's like to be on the ground. I think (and hope) I did a decent job of that, given the various (and unfortunately, increasingly) stringent restrictions placed upon military bloggers. When the people at the star level not only realize what blogs are, but figure out the entire concept of user-provided content and how it is changing the Internet, only then will we make progress on that level. Ok, enough rant for the day.

I am planning on going back to work on Tuesday (Monday is MLK Day) so I expect to start blogging a little more frequently then. Have a great weekend and don't forget the Eagles game tonight at 8pm (against New Orleans) and "24" starts with a 2 hour season premeire tomorrow night!

On Friday night, Muhlenberg (7-3) lost to Governor Mifflin, 17-7. On Saturday afternoon, State College (8-2) lost to Harrisburg 32-27.

On Saturday, Wisconsin defeated Penn State 13-3 in a game I recapped here.

I was 9/18 for the week and 105/190 (91st percentile) in College Football Pick'em.

I was 7/13 for the week (with the MNF game still to play) and 77/127 (86th percentile) in Pro Football Pick'em.

In Fantasy Football, the Hyde Park Hangovers (currently 6-2) are leading 60-54 going into tonight's MNF game. Both teams have one remaining player: for me it's Seattle WR Darrell Jackson; for my opponent it's Seattle kicker Josh Brown.

Mark Martin finished 22nd at Texas and slipped to 9th in the standings. It is turning out to be a a disappointing finish to an otherwise amazing career.

The Eagles did not lose this week. Of course, they had a bye week which means they didn't play!

Weekend sports roundup

On Saturday, Penn State beat Purdue 12-0 in a game I recapped here and here.

Both pick'ems are getting tougher as the weeks go on.

I was 8/18 for the week and 96/172 for the season (89th percentile) in College Football Pick'em.

I was 7/13 for the week (with the MNF game still to play) and 69/113 (83rd percentile) in Pro Football Pick'em.

In Fantasy Football, the Hyde Park Hangovers (now 6-2, in second place) opened up a can of whoop ass this weekend and won by a very comfortable 102-37 margin.

I thought the Steelers had turned the corner and would easily defeat the lowly Oakland Raiders this week. I was wrong, and thus eliminated from Survival Football. Another player was also eliminated, leaving only 2 of the original 25. I would have loved to win, but getting to the final four feels pretty good in my first year playing Survival Football.

Mark Martin was wrecked for the second time in three weeks and dropped to 8th in the standings, an almost insurmountable 201 points back from the leader with only three races to go. As Mark and many of his best fans know, it just wasn't ever meant to be...

Finally, the Eagles disappointed once again, losing their third straight game. This was the only of their four losses that wasn't lost on the final play of the game.

On Saturday, Penn State defeated Illinois 26-12 in a game that I recapped here.

I was 9/20 for the week and 88/154 for the season (90th percentile) in College Football Pick'em.

I was a horrendous 5/13 for the week and 62/99 for the season (82nd percentile) in Pro Football Pick'em with the MNF game remaining.

The Eagles came back from a 17-0 deficit but lost on a last second 62-yard field goal (3rd longest in NFL history to the Saints, 23-21.

In Fantasy Football, the Hyde Park Hangovers are winning big with one player left to go on MNF. My opponent has no players left, so it's a win already. Almost as important is the fact that the league leader is losing going into tonight's MNF game (although he does have two players left). If he were to lose, we'd be tied once again for the league lead.

In Survival Football I picked Denver to beat Cleveland, which they did. Five more teams were eliminated (now 21) so only four teams remain!

Mark Martin finished 24th at Martinsville (and despite the name, not one of his favorite tracks) and dropped to 6th in the point standings, but actually closed the gap between him and the leader from 102 points to 96 points.

What a very disappointing sports weekend.

After Penn State lost to Michigan on Saturday night, Mark Martin was wrecked at Lowe's Motor Speedway and finished 30th, leaving him in 4th place in the standings, 102 points behind leader Jeff Burton.

On Sunday, the Eagles blew a late lead and lost to the New Orleans Saints 27-24.

In College Football Pick'em, I was 8/19 for the week (only the second week below 50%) and 79/134 (91st percentile) for the season.

In Pro Football Pick'em, I was 6/12 for the week (after going 14/14 last week) and 56/86 (82nd percentile) with the Monday Night Football game still to play.
